Ger Thijs is sinds1971 actief in het toneel; aanvankelijk als acteur, maar al gauw als regisseur en artistiek leider. De laatste jaren manifesteert hij zich ook als schrijver/bewerker. Het Toneel Speelt voerde vier teksten van hem op: Beneden de Rivieren Het Licht in de Ogen, Raak me aan en Ik benweg. Deze werden allen genomineerd voor de Toneel Publieksprijs. Hummelinck Stuurman produceerde zijn Couperusbewerkingen van De Stille Kracht en Van oude mensen, de dingen die voorbij gaan, zijn voor de Toneel Publieksprijs genomineerde toneelbewerkingen Heren van de Thee en Karakter én zijn nieuwe, eigen teksten De Grote Liefde en De Kus. Ook De Kus werd genomineerd voor de Toneel Publieksprijs en werd door de jury van het theaterfestival 2011 geselecteerd als één van de vijf beste grote zaal producties.

Ger Thijs is a phenomenon in the Dutch theater world. His plays are extremely successful. He has worked with the companies Toneelgroep Theater, the Publiekstheater and The National Theater. His staging is characterized by an eye for detail and a love of repertoire.

Ger Thijs, born 1948. Works in the theatre since 1971. Het was trained as an actor, started directing in the third year of his professional career. Was artistic manager of several companies. Directed the world repertoire, Euripides, Racine, Strindberg, Ibsen, Schnitzler, Ceckov, but also modern plays: Strauss, Bernhard, Hampton, Bond, Noren, mostly in his own translations. Adapted novels for the stage, notably the works of dutch classic authors. Wrote novels, the first of which won a prize for best debutante fiction. Is now mainly active as playwright. Directs his own work succesfully. His plays are critically acclaimed and nominated for prizes. ‘Ger Thijs is a phenomenon in the Dutch theater world. His plays are extremely successful. His staging is characterized by an eye for detail and a love of repertoire.’ His plays, Beneath the Rivers and The Light in the Eyes were both nominated for the NRC Public’s Prize. The Volkskrant newspaper wrote of the successful performance Touch Me (2005): “A play with virtuoso writing, full of funny dialogues.
